This page allows you to work out the size radiator you will need to adequately heat each room in your house.

Heat load required for a room is decided by many factors such as:

  • Insulation used, wall and ceiling
  • Windows, type, size and direction facing.
  • Walls that are external
  • Ceiling height.

 

This guide helps to work out a wattage requirement for a room. Then from the tables of radiator sizes available, we match the most suitable radiator to the room.

We also want to consider factors such as “what is the room used for”? Bedrooms usually will not require as much heat as a living room for example.

Calculation Steps:

1/    Measure room:    Length x Width x Height in Metres    = Room size in Cubic Metres Cu/m3

Example:  3.5m wide x 3.2m long x 2.4m ceiling hieght = 26.88 cu metres

2/    Multiply x wattage from Guide = Wattage required to heat this room

Example: 2 external walls =30watts per Cu/M    30 x 26.88 = 806 watts required to heat this room. My room is a bedroom so my heat requirement is likely to be lower rather than higher from a selection viewpoint. Therefore i will look for a 750watt model.

3/     Select a suitable wall space for your radiator. This can often be under a window.

Look at the room, starting near the window for suitable locations.

4/ Compare to tables for suitable model. Note there are two height ranges in the

Yali models and often there is two lengths available for a wattage size.

Thermosoft heatload calculation guide

By using the house plan as a guide you may wish to work out your own heating requirements in Watts. You can then use this wattage figure to match with a suitable Thermosoft radiator from the table, taking the physical size into consideration to fit available wall space in your room. You might need to use more than one radiator in larger rooms. It’s best to work in cubic meters, as heating is applicable to room volume rather than to floor area. On the plan you will find the wattage/cubic meter for each type of room. A room with only one external wall requires less wattage than say a room with three external walls. The figures also relate to normal insulated homes – i.e. at least R2.5 in the ceilings and R1.7 in the walls. For large windows you should add five Watts per cubic meter. For extra large windows you should add another five Watts per cubic meter. If you have double-glazing the above figures could be reduced. Please refer to Southern Cross Companies Pty Ltd. Please also note that the above figures relate to radiant heating only as other type of heaters,
including open ended wall mounted convention heaters, could require considerably higher wattage.
